CLEVELAND — Fritz Peterson, who won 109 games over nine seasons with the Yankees from 1966-74, has died. He was 82.

Peterson was an All-Star with the Yankees in 1970, winning 20 games that season while posting a 2.90 ERA. The left-hander had a 3.10 ERA over his nine years in pinstripes, part of an 11-year career. He ranks 11th on the Yankees’ franchise leaderboard in games started (265), 12th in innings pitched (1,857 1/3) and 18th in strikeouts (893).

Tottenham To END Arsenal's Title Hopes?

No cause of death was immediately announced. Peterson, who overcome prostate cancer, also revealed to the New York Post in 2018 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Yankees released the following statement about Peterson on Friday evening:

“The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Fritz Peterson, who was a formidable pitcher and affable presence throughout his nine years in pinstripes. Along with longtime teammate Mel Stottlemyre, Peterson was part of a devastating one-two combination at the top of the Yankees’ rotation. A known prankster and well-liked among his teammates and coaches, Peterson had an outgoing personality and inquisitive nature that brought lightheartedness to the clubhouse on a regular basis and belied his prowess on the mound — most notably his impeccable control, which was among the best in the Majors. Peterson will be greatly missed by the Yankees, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Susanne, and the entire Peterson family.”

What made Peterson even more of a household name was something he and a teammate did off the field.

During spring training before the 1973 season, Peterson and Mike Kekich famously traded wives.

Peterson moved forward with Kekich’s wife, Susanne. Kekich did the same with Peterson’s wife, Marilyn. Kids and pets were included.

At one point, actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon had a movie in the works based on the wife swap.

The Chicago native and Northern Illinois University product pitched for Cleveland and Texas after his Yankees career.
