Michigan Wolverines Win in Week 1, But Review Is Worrisome

The Michigan Wolverines began their 2024 football season with a victory in Week 1, defeating East Carolina 30-3. However, despite the solid win, the game left both fans and analysts with mixed feelings, raising some concerns about the team’s overall performance.

### Dominant, But Unconvincing

On paper, Michigan’s victory seemed dominant, particularly on the defensive side, where they held East Carolina to a mere field goal. The Wolverines’ defense was stifling, as expected, showcasing their depth and talent. The defensive line consistently pressured the opposing quarterback, and the secondary allowed few opportunities for big plays. This defensive prowess should reassure Michigan fans that the unit is still one of the best in the country.

Offensively, Michigan moved the ball effectively, especially in the first half. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy demonstrated good decision-making and accuracy, completing 80% of his passes for over 250 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Blake Corum also had a solid outing, finding the end zone and showing flashes of the explosiveness that made him a Heisman Trophy candidate last year.

### Lingering Concerns

Despite the win, some troubling signs emerged that could impact Michigan as they face tougher competition later in the season. The first concern was the offensive line play. Although McCarthy had a clean pocket for most of the game, the running game never fully got into gear. Corum and Donovan Edwards were productive but didn’t break many big runs, which may indicate issues with run blocking or play design. Against a stronger defensive front, these issues could become more pronounced.

Another concern was the team’s seeming lack of urgency and finishing ability. After building a comfortable lead, the Wolverines appeared to ease up in the second half, failing to score a touchdown after halftime. This lack of a killer instinct could be costly in closer games, where maintaining momentum is crucial. It’s one thing to dominate a weaker opponent, but championship teams must keep their foot on the gas for all four quarters.

Special teams also raised some eyebrows, particularly in the kicking game. Michigan missed a field goal and had a punt partially blocked, both of which could have been costly mistakes against a stronger opponent. Special teams play is often the difference in tight games, and Michigan will need to clean up these errors quickly.

### Looking Ahead

While Michigan fans should be pleased with the Week 1 victory, the performance revealed areas that require immediate attention. Head coach Jim Harbaugh, who served a self-imposed suspension during this game, will undoubtedly address these issues as the team prepares for more challenging games down the road. The Wolverines have high aspirations this season, including winning the Big Ten and making another College Football Playoff appearance. To achieve these goals, they will need to iron out these early-season wrinkles.

In summary, Michigan’s Week 1 win was a solid start to the season but also a reminder that there’s still work to be done. The Wolverines have the talent to compete with the best, but they must ensure that minor issues don’t evolve into major problems as the season progresses.
