Washington Commanders Opens New Ever Worst and Terrible Case For Quarterback

The Washington Commanders have had a tumultuous history when it comes to the quarterback position, a trend that seems to be continuing with their latest case. Once again, they find themselves in a quagmire, struggling to find a reliable and consistent leader under center. This latest episode is shaping up to be one of the most challenging yet, a scenario some fans are already dubbing the “worst case” for the franchise.

Over the past few seasons, the Commanders have cycled through a carousel of quarterbacks, none of whom have been able to cement their place as the definitive starter. From the brief hope brought by veteran Alex Smith’s miraculous comeback to the disappointing tenure of Dwayne Haskins, and the fleeting flashes of competence from players like Taylor Heinicke and Carson Wentz, stability has eluded the team. This revolving door has left the Commanders in a perpetual state of flux, undermining their ability to compete in the NFC East.

The 2024 season was supposed to be different. The front office and coaching staff believed they had addressed the problem by drafting a promising young talent, Sam Howell. Howell, despite showing potential in his college days at North Carolina, has struggled to adapt to the speed and complexity of the NFL game. His inconsistent performances, coupled with a shaky offensive line and lackluster play-calling, have only exacerbated the Commanders’ woes.

Now, the Commanders face a dire situation. Howell’s underwhelming start has forced the team to consider other options, but the alternatives are bleak. Veteran backups like Jacoby Brissett have experience but are seen more as stopgap solutions rather than long-term answers. The potential for a mid-season trade is always there, but the Commanders would likely need to give up significant draft capital for any quarterback capable of turning their season around — a risky move given their already depleted resources and past misfires in the trade market.

This dilemma has put immense pressure on head coach Ron Rivera and the front office. The Commanders have invested heavily in other areas, boasting a talented defense and a promising core of skill players like Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson. Yet, all of that potential is being squandered without competent quarterback play. The frustration is palpable among the fan base, who have endured years of mediocrity and now see their team’s window for success slipping away.

The implications of failing to resolve this quarterback crisis are severe. Another lost season could lead to sweeping changes in the organization, with Rivera’s job potentially on the line. It would also continue to hinder the development of their young players and could even set the franchise back several years as they once again find themselves in the quarterback wilderness.

In the end, the Washington Commanders are staring down what could be their “worst and most terrible” case scenario at quarterback yet. If they cannot find a solution soon, the repercussions will be felt far beyond the 2024 season, leaving fans and the organization alike wondering when, if ever, their long-standing quarterback curse will be lifted.
