Florida State University’s football program has recently experienced significant changes in its tight end roster, both through recruitment and player departures.
Recruitment Gains:
Tae’shaun Gelsey: In December 2024, four-star tight end Tae’shaun Gelsey flipped his commitment from the Florida Gators to the Seminoles. Gelsey, a 6’4″, 215-pound athlete from Riverside High School in Jacksonville, Florida, is ranked as the 330th best player nationally by 247Sports Composite. Initially committed to the Gators since June, Gelsey chose FSU after receiving an offer in October and attending games against UNC and Florida. While many schools viewed him as a tight end, FSU recruited him as a jumbo wide receiver. In his senior season, he recorded over 50 receptions and 12 touchdowns, showcasing his versatility and athleticism.
Chase Loftin: Earlier, in June 2024, four-star tight end Chase Loftin committed to FSU over programs like Texas A&M, Nebraska, and Missouri. Standing at 6’6″ and weighing 215 pounds, Loftin is regarded as the No. 374 overall prospect and the No. 19 tight end in the 2025 class according to 247Sports. His commitment bolstered FSU’s recruiting class, which saw a significant rise in national rankings following his pledge.
Player Departures:
Jackson West: In December 2024, redshirt junior tight end Jackson West entered the transfer portal after four years with the Seminoles. Despite an injury-riddled career, West was named FSU’s most improved offensive player in 2023 and appeared in the final 12 games, primarily on special teams. His departure opens opportunities for incoming talents like Gelsey and Loftin to make an immediate impact.
Jerrale Powers: Around the same time, tight end Jerrale Powers also announced his entry into the transfer portal. A developmental prospect from Duncanville, Texas, Powers played in just one game for FSU without recording any statistics. His transfer, possibly closer to home, further underscores the dynamic nature of FSU’s tight end roster.
These developments highlight a period of transition for Florida State’s tight end position, with the program securing promising recruits while also experiencing departures that will shape the team’s strategy and performance in the upcoming season.
