Indiana Hoosiers’ Season in Jeopardy Following Player Suspensions Over Marijuana Charges

In May 2015, the Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball program faced significant challenges following the dismissal of forwards Devin Davis and Hanner Mosquera-Perea due to marijuana-related incidents. These events not only impacted the team’s roster but also raised concerns about the program’s culture and discipline.

The situation began when campus police responded to a complaint about the smell of marijuana emanating from a second-floor apartment. Upon investigation, officers discovered a small amount of raw marijuana in a backpack belonging to Devin Davis, leading to his citation for possession under 30 grams. Hanner Mosquera-Perea was present during the incident but was not cited at that time. Following the incident, head coach Tom Crean announced the immediate suspension of Davis from all basketball activities, pending further review. Subsequently, both Davis and Mosquera-Perea were dismissed from the team for failing to meet program responsibilities. Crean expressed his disappointment, stating, “As a team, we’ve lost two good players… What’s much tougher… we are not going to be able to continue to help them grow up, mature and strive for their potential.” ([espn.com](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12888609/indiana-hoosiers-dismiss-devin-davis-hanner-mosquera-perea-pot-incident?utm_source=chatgpt.com))

These dismissals compounded existing challenges for the Hoosiers. The previous season had been marred by off-court issues, including:

– Freshman Emmitt Holt’s citation for underage drinking after an accident that resulted in a serious head injury to Davis.

– Suspensions of players Stan Robinson and Troy Williams for failing drug tests during the summer.

These incidents, coupled with a disappointing 17-15 record in the 2013-14 season, intensified scrutiny on Coach Crean and the program’s direction. Despite these challenges, the team managed a 20-14 record in the subsequent season, securing an NCAA tournament berth before falling to Wichita State in the round of 64. The dismissals of Davis and Mosquera-Perea not only affected the team’s depth and performance but also highlighted broader concerns about player conduct and program culture. These events underscored the importance of maintaining discipline and accountability within collegiate athletics, serving as a reminder of the challenges programs face in upholding their standards and reputations.
