Bears’ Trade for Matthew Judon Falls Through Due to Contract Extension Hurdles

 

The Chicago Bears were on the verge of making a significant move to bolster their defense by trading for New England Patriots pass rusher Matthew Judon. However, negotiations ultimately collapsed due to complications surrounding a potential contract extension, leaving the Bears to explore other options ahead of the upcoming season.

 

According to league sources, Chicago and New England had engaged in advanced trade discussions, with the Bears eager to add an elite edge rusher to complement their defensive front. Judon, a four-time Pro Bowler, has been one of the most productive pass rushers in the league, recording 32 sacks over his first three seasons in New England. His ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks made him a prime target for Chicago, which has been looking to strengthen its pass rush.

 

However, the trade hit a major roadblock when Judon and the Bears couldn’t agree on terms for a contract extension. The 31-year-old veteran is entering the final year of his four-year, $56 million deal with the Patriots, and he was reportedly seeking a long-term commitment with significant guaranteed money. Chicago, while willing to offer an extension, was hesitant to meet Judon’s full demands, leading to an impasse.

 

With no agreement in place, the Bears ultimately decided to pull out of the trade rather than risk acquiring a high-profile player without long-term security. This development leaves the team still searching for an impact pass rusher, as they look to build around young defensive talent like Montez Sweat, whom they acquired last season.

 

For the Patriots, retaining Judon—at least for now—keeps their top defensive playmaker in place, though his future in New England remains uncertain. Given his contract situation and New England’s ongoing roster retooling, Judon could still be a trade candidate closer to the season if another team is willing to meet his contract demands.

 

Chicago, meanwhile, will need to pivot to other options, whether through free agency, the draft, or future trade opportunities. While missing out on Judon is a setback, the Bears remain committed to upgrading their roster as they continue their rebuild under head coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles.
