Michigan Commit Stuns Fighting Irish Flips Defensive EDGE Rusher No.1 2026 Recruit Committed To the Wolverines In a Stunning Move

In a significant development on the college football recruiting front, four-star safety Ivan Taylor has flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to the University of Michigan. Taylor, a standout from Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange High School, had been pledged to the Fighting Irish since December 2023. However, after taking official visits to both Alabama and Michigan in June 2024, he reconsidered his options and announced his commitment to the Wolverines in July 2024. citeturn0search2

Taylor’s decision to switch allegiances was influenced by several factors, including the departure of former Notre Dame safeties coach Chris O’Leary to the Los Angeles Chargers. This coaching change prompted Taylor to reassess his commitment. During his official visit to Michigan, he and his family were impressed by head coach Sherrone Moore and his vision for the program. Taylor noted, “Me, my mom and my dad really liked him. We like what he’s doing and how he’s building the program and the types of guys he brings in.” citeturn0search6

At 6-foot and 180 pounds, Taylor is regarded as one of the top defensive backs in the 2025 recruiting class. The On3 Industry Ranking lists him as the No. 7 safety and No. 59 overall prospect nationally. citeturn0search6 His junior season statistics include 50 tackles (six for loss), one interception, and three forced fumbles over 10 games. Notably, Taylor is the son of former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Ike Taylor, a two-time Super Bowl champion. citeturn0search2

Taylor’s commitment bolsters Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class, making him the 14th verbal commitment for the Wolverines. His addition enhances an already strong defensive lineup, joining other top recruits such as defensive lineman Nate Marshall and defensive back Kainoa Winston. citeturn0search6

This flip represents a significant recruiting victory for Michigan, especially given Taylor’s previous commitment to a major rival. For Notre Dame, his departure marks the fourth decommitment in their 2025 cycle, following tight end Nate Roberts, wide receiver Shaun Terry, and defensive end CJ May. citeturn0search2

As the recruiting landscape continues to evolve, Taylor’s decision underscores the dynamic nature of college football commitments and the impact of coaching changes and official visits on a recruit’s choice.
