Michigan State Spartans Bolster Offensive and Defensive Lineup for 2026-27 Season

As the Michigan State Spartans gear up for the 2026-27 college football season, head coach Jonathan Smith and his staff have made significant moves to strengthen both the offensive and defensive lines. After a rebuilding phase over the past few seasons, the Spartans are aiming to become serious contenders in the Big Ten, relying on a mix of experienced transfers, top-tier recruits, and returning standouts.

    #### **Offensive Line: Strength in the Trenches**

One of the biggest priorities for Michigan State this offseason was solidifying the offensive line, which struggled with consistency in recent years. The coaching staff addressed this by landing two high-profile transfers: **Ethan Calloway (OT, North Carolina transfer)** and **Jared Thompson (OG, Texas A&M transfer)**. Both linemen bring size, physicality, and experience to a unit that will be tasked with protecting quarterback Aidan Chiles and paving the way for the Spartans’ rushing attack.

Additionally, MSU secured a major commitment from **four-star recruit Marcus Williams (6’6″, 320 lbs)**, one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the 2026 class. With returning veterans like junior center **Nick Sampson** and senior guard **Bryce Bennett**, the Spartans are set to have their deepest and most talented offensive line in years.

    #### **Defensive Line: A Fierce Pass Rush and Run Defense**

On the defensive side, Michigan State prioritized adding size and athleticism to its front seven. The Spartans landed **five-star defensive tackle Isaiah Carter (6’5″, 310 lbs)**, a dominant interior presence who was heavily recruited by SEC powerhouses. Carter is expected to contribute immediately alongside returning defensive ends **Jayden Collins** and **Tyrese Montgomery**, who combined for 12.5 sacks last season.

To further bolster the pass rush, the Spartans also secured **highly touted JUCO transfer Darius Green**, a quick and explosive edge rusher with a reputation for disrupting opposing quarterbacks. Green’s addition should give MSU one of the most formidable defensive fronts in the conference.

    #### **Outlook for 2026-27**

With a reinforced offensive line protecting a talented skill-position group and a defensive line ready to dominate in the trenches, the Spartans have positioned themselves for a potential breakout season. If these new additions live up to expectations, Michigan State could be a legitimate contender in the Big Ten race, making a push for a New Year’s Six bowl or even a College Football Playoff berth.
