Virginia Tech’s softball program has a storied history of exceptional performances by standout pitchers. One of the most notable is Angela Tincher O’Brien, who pitched for the Hokies from 2005 to 2008. During her tenure, Tincher achieved remarkable feats, including throwing multiple no-hitters and perfect games. She led the nation in ERA and strikeout ratio, and in 2008, she surpassed 2,000 career strikeouts, becoming just the third pitcher to do so. Her dominance on the mound was instrumental in propelling Virginia Tech to its first Women’s College World Series appearance in 2008. In recognition of her contributions, Tincher was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
In more recent years, the Hokies have continued to showcase exceptional pitching talent. In 2022, freshman Emma Lemley delivered a stellar performance by pitching a no-hitter against Longwood, striking out 13 batters and leading Virginia Tech to a 5-0 victory. This achievement marked Lemley’s first career no-hitter and highlighted her potential as a rising star in collegiate softball.
The 2024 season saw the Hokies’ offense make headlines by breaking the program’s single-season home run record. Junior Cori McMillan’s leadoff home run against Virginia marked the team’s 101st homer of the season, surpassing the previous record. This offensive prowess, combined with strong pitching performances, underscores the comprehensive strength of Virginia Tech’s softball program.
These milestones reflect the ongoing excellence and competitive spirit of Virginia Tech softball, as the team continues to build upon its rich history of success.
