In a significant move for South Dakota State University’s (SDSU) women’s basketball program, five-star recruit Brooklynn Felchle has committed to the Jackrabbits, choosing SDSU over offers from prominent programs including Alabama, Tennessee, and James Madison University. Felchle, a standout 6-foot-3 forward from Bismarck Legacy High School in North Dakota, is recognized as one of the nation’s top prospects for the class of 2026.
Felchle’s decision marks a historic moment for Legacy High School, as she becomes the institution’s first athlete to commit to a Division I program. Her coach, Jim Petrik, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “To be the first Division I athlete for Legacy, that’s huge.”
Throughout her high school career, Felchle has demonstrated exceptional talent and versatility. As a junior, she averaged 15.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game, earning her all-conference and all-state honors for the second consecutive year. Her consistent performance has been instrumental in leading the Sabers to three consecutive state tournament appearances.
Beyond her athletic prowess, Felchle is also committed to academic excellence. Maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, she plans to major in mechanical engineering at SDSU. Felchle’s dedication to her studies played a pivotal role in her college selection process. She remarked, “At the end of the day, unfortunately, basketball can’t go on forever, and realizing I also have to set myself up the best I possibly can for after the fact.”
Felchle’s recruitment journey was characterized by humility and a focus on personal growth. She chose not to publicize her college offers on social media, believing that her on-court performance should speak for itself. “For me, I thought I was earning it through my play instead of my presence off of what people see,” she explained.
SDSU’s head women’s basketball coach, Aaron Johnston, expressed enthusiasm about Felchle’s commitment. He highlighted her impressive track record and the value she brings to the team, noting her all-state selections and significant contributions to her high school’s success. Johnston also acknowledged Felchle’s multi-sport background, which includes participation in volleyball and track and field.
Felchle’s commitment is part of a strong recruiting class for the Jackrabbits. Alongside her, SDSU has secured commitments from other talented players, including Abby Hoselton from St. Michael-Albertville High School in Minnesota and Hadley Thul from Alexandria Area High School in Minnesota. Both athletes have impressive credentials and are expected to make significant contributions to the team.
Felchle’s decision to join SDSU over other major programs underscores the growing appeal and competitiveness of the Jackrabbits’ women’s basketball program. Her blend of athletic skill, academic dedication, and humility positions her as a valuable addition to the team and a role model for aspiring athletes.
