The Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball team has undergone significant roster adjustments and leadership changes for the 2024–25 season, aiming to build upon their previous performances and address key departures.

    **Roster Adjustments**

Following a 2023–24 season that concluded with a 20–15 overall record and a second-round exit in the NCAA tournament, the Spartans faced the challenge of replacing several pivotal players, including A.J. Hoggard, Mady Sissoko, Tyson Walker, and Malik Hall. In response, Head Coach Tom Izzo strategically utilized the transfer portal and incoming freshmen to bolster the team’s depth and talent.

Notably, the Spartans welcomed forward Frankie Fidler and center Szymon Zapala as transfers. Fidler, a 6-foot-7 forward from the University of Nebraska Omaha, was a First Team All-Summit Conference selection, averaging 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game during the 2023–24 season. His scoring ability and versatility are expected to make an immediate impact. Zapala, a 7-foot center from Longwood University, contributed significantly to his team’s Big South Championship run, averaging 9.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. His presence adds size and experience to the Spartans’ frontcourt.

The roster also features a blend of returning players and promising freshmen. Sophomore forward Xavier Booker has focused on enhancing his defense and rebounding, aiming to solidify his role as a starter. Freshman guard Jase Richardson, son of former Spartan Jason Richardson, has impressed with his shooting and overall skill set, suggesting a bright future ahead.

    **Team Leadership**

In terms of leadership, senior guard Jaden Akins has been appointed as one of the team captains for the 2024–25 season. Akins, the only four-year Spartan on the roster, has embraced his role as a primary leader, guiding a relatively young team through the challenges of the season. His experience and performance on the court have been instrumental in the team’s development.

    **Season Performance**

The Spartans have demonstrated resilience and growth throughout the season. Notable victories include wins against Illinois (80–78 on January 19, 2025), Minnesota (73–51 on January 28, 2025), and a significant triumph over rival Michigan (75–62 on February 21, 2025). These performances highlight the team’s ability to compete effectively within the Big Ten Conference.

As the season progresses, the integration of new talent and the leadership of seasoned players like Akins will be crucial in determining the Spartans’ success. The team’s adaptability and commitment to growth position them as a formidable contender in the conference and beyond.
