Izzo Zeroes In: Michigan State Eyes Impact Portal Addition to Replace Key Player

In a significant shift from his traditional recruitment strategy, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has actively engaged with the transfer portal to bolster the Spartans’ roster. This change is exemplified by the recent acquisition of Frankie Fidler, a standout wing from Omaha, who committed to Michigan State on April 23, 2024.

Fidler, a 6-foot-7 wing, was the second-leading scorer in the Summit League during the 2023-24 season, averaging 20.1 points per game. His impressive stats include shooting 45% from the field and 36% from three-point range, along with 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. His versatility and scoring ability are expected to fill the void left by departing players Tyson Walker, A.J. Hoggard, and Malik Hall, providing the Spartans with a dynamic presence on the wing.

Fidler chose Michigan State over other notable programs, including Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Creighton. His visit to East Lansing on April 13, 2024, played a pivotal role in his decision-making process. This commitment marks a departure from Izzo’s previous reluctance to utilize the transfer portal, as Fidler becomes the first transfer to join the Spartans in over three years, following Tyson Walker’s transfer in March 2021.

Historically, Izzo has been cautious about the transfer portal, expressing concerns about its impact on player development and the collegiate athletic landscape. He has emphasized the importance of perseverance and growth through adversity, stating, “Unhappy drives you. Unhappy pushes you. Unhappy makes people realize, ‘You know what? I’m not good enough. I’ve got to get better.'”

Despite his reservations, Izzo acknowledges the evolving nature of college basketball and the necessity to adapt. The addition of Fidler reflects a strategic move to address specific needs within the team, particularly on the wing. This approach allows returning guard Jaden Akins to play his natural position at the two, while rising sophomore Jeremy Fears is poised to take on a more prominent role at point guard.

Looking ahead, the Spartans aim to strengthen their frontcourt. Players like Xavier Booker, who added 20 pounds of muscle during the season, and Jaxon Kohler are expected to step up. However, Izzo may continue to explore the transfer portal to add experienced big men to the roster.

In summary, Tom Izzo’s decision to actively engage with the transfer portal, highlighted by the acquisition of Frankie Fidler, signifies a notable adaptation in his coaching strategy. This move addresses immediate roster needs and positions the Spartans for a competitive season ahead.
