A Cleveland native and close family friend of NBA superstar LeBron James, Johnson began his collegiate career at Ohio State in December 2020 after graduating early from Cleveland Heights High School as a four-star prospect. During his freshman year, he appeared in 17 games, totaling 21 points and seven rebounds. His sophomore season saw increased responsibility, with Johnson averaging 4.4 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists over 26 games, including five starts.
Seeking greater playing time, Johnson transferred to South Carolina ahead of the 2022-23 season. There, he emerged as a key player, starting 29 of 30 games and averaging 12.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.
