In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Purdue community, junior guard Braden Smith has declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, foregoing his final year of collegiate eligibility. This decision comes on the heels of a stellar season that saw Smith earn consensus First-Team All-American honors and cement his status as one of the premier point guards in college basketball.

Smith’s ascent has been nothing short of meteoric. A native of Westfield, Indiana, he has been a cornerstone of the Boilermakers’ success since his freshman year, starting every game and consistently delivering standout performances. In the 2024–25 season, Smith averaged 16.1 points, 8.7 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game, showcasing his all-around prowess on the court. His exceptional playmaking abilities were highlighted by setting a Big Ten record with 175 assists in conference play, surpassing the previous mark held by Michigan State’s Cassius Winston.

Beyond the statistics, Smith’s impact was felt in his leadership and clutch performances. He became Purdue’s all-time assists leader, amassing 732 assists over 107 games. His ability to control the tempo, make intelligent decisions, and contribute defensively made him an invaluable asset to the team. Notably, Smith joined the elite company of Magic Johnson as the only players in Big Ten history to record 450 points, 250 assists, 125 rebounds, and 60 steals in a single season.

Smith’s decision to enter the NBA Draft is seen as a significant loss for Purdue but a testament to his readiness for the professional level. Analysts have praised his high basketball IQ, court vision, and shooting efficiency, with a career three-point shooting percentage of 39.6%. While some scouts have noted his lack of elite athleticism, his comparison to NBA veteran Chris Paul underscores his potential to excel as a cerebral floor general in the league.

As Purdue prepares to navigate the upcoming season without their star point guard, Smith’s legacy at the university is firmly established. His contributions have not only elevated the program’s national profile but also set a standard for future Boilermakers. Fans and teammates alike will undoubtedly miss his presence, but his journey to the NBA is a source of pride and inspiration for the Purdue community.

Smith’s departure marks the end of an era for Purdue basketball, but his professional aspirations signal the beginning of an exciting new chapter. As he transitions to the NBA, his collegiate achievements and leadership qualities suggest a promising future at the next level.
