Cincinnati Bengals Dismis Promising Defensive Lineman Amidst Week 5 Roster Shuffle

The Cincinnati Bengals made significant adjustments to their roster ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, parting ways with promising defensive lineman Zach Carter. This decision follows a rocky start to the season, where the Bengals’ defense, particularly the defensive line, struggled with consistency and injuries. Despite facing relatively weaker opponents like the Patriots, Commanders, and Panthers, the Bengals’ defense has been unable to maintain strong performances, especially in stopping the run.

Carter played a notable role in the first four weeks, logging 151 snaps, which accounted for 59% of the team’s defensive plays. However, his performance was hindered by his size and hybrid role as both a defensive end and tackle. At 290 pounds, Carter was seen as undersized for his position, contributing to the team’s vulnerability against the run. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 44.3 further highlighted these struggles, leading the Bengals to waive him in favor of other defensive reinforcements.

The Bengals are set to welcome back key players from injury, including 2023 first-round pick Myles Murphy and reserve nose tackle McKinnley Jackson. These additions provide much-needed depth as they prepare to face the high-powered Ravens offense, which currently leads the NFL with 429.5 yards per game, including 220.3 rushing yards.

While Carter is expected to join the practice squad, the Bengals are hoping these changes will bolster their defense as they look to challenge divisional rivals in a pivotal matchup【6†source】【7†source】.
