Robert Lombardi, the long-serving Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), has announced his retirement after over a decade of leadership. Under his stewardship, Lombardi became one of the most prominent and respected figures in the world of high school sports, leaving a legacy of expanding opportunities for student-athletes across Pennsylvania.
Lombardi’s career with the PIAA began in 1988 when he joined as an assistant executive director. He quickly made his mark, helping to shape policy and ensuring fair play in high school athletics. In 2012, he was appointed Executive Director, a role he held for 12 years. During this time, Lombardi oversaw significant changes in high school sports, including the expansion of championships, the introduction of new sports, and the management of the increasing complexities surrounding student-athlete eligibility and transfer rules.
A fierce advocate for student-athletes, Lombardi focused on balancing academics and athletics, ensuring that sports programs emphasized the importance of education while fostering athletic excellence. He also championed sportsmanship initiatives, with an eye on building character through competition.
Lombardi’s leadership extended beyond Pennsylvania, as he became a voice in national discussions on high school sports, working with other state athletic associations and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) to address issues like athlete safety, coaching standards, and the impact of technology on sports.
Upon announcing his retirement, Lombardi expressed gratitude for his time at the PIAA and the opportunity to serve student-athletes and schools across the state. His departure marks the end of an era for Pennsylvania high school sports, and his leadership will be missed by athletes, coaches, and administrators alike.
