Julien Horton Four-Star DB Top Tier Talent Commit To Play 2025-26 Season For WVU Football Program

West Virginia University’s (WVU) football program has secured a significant addition to its 2025 recruiting class with the commitment of defensive back Julien Horton. Horton, a standout from Bel Air High School in Abingdon, Maryland, had previously committed to the University of North Carolina (UNC) but announced his decision to join the Mountaineers on December 4, 2024.

**High School Achievements**

During his senior year at Bel Air High School, Horton showcased his versatility by excelling on both sides of the ball. Defensively, he recorded 41 tackles, including 23 solo stops, secured a sack, and returned an interception for 70 yards. Offensively, Horton amassed 24 receptions for 238 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 265 yards and two touchdowns. His contributions were instrumental in leading Bel Air to a 7-5 record and a berth in the quarterfinals of the Maryland 3A state playoffs.

In his junior year, Horton’s exceptional performance earned him several accolades, including Maryland 3A All-State First Team honors, Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Player of the Year, All-3A North Region selection, and recognition as the Aegis (Harford County) Football Player of the Year. That season, he tallied 32 tackles, one interception, three pass breakups, and a forced fumble on defense. On offense, he recorded 65 catches for 696 yards and eight touchdowns, along with 19 carries for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

**Recruitment and Commitment**

Horton’s athletic prowess attracted attention from numerous collegiate programs. He received offers from institutions such as Boston College, Cincinnati, Colorado, Duke, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Vanderbilt. Initially committed to UNC in June 2024, Horton reconsidered his decision following the departure of UNC’s head coach, Mack Brown, in late November. This development opened the door for WVU’s coaching staff, particularly secondary coach ShaDon Brown, to intensify their recruitment efforts. Their persistence culminated in Horton’s commitment to WVU on National Signing Day.

**Player Profile and Rankings**

Standing at 6 feet and weighing 170 pounds, Horton is recognized for his speed, physicality, and adaptability in the secondary. He is rated as a three-star prospect by major recruiting services, including ESPN, 247Sports, On3, and Rivals. On3 ranks him as the No. 14 player in Maryland and the No. 45 safety nationally, while 247Sports lists him as the No. 24 player in the state.

**Impact on WVU Football**

Horton’s commitment is a strategic acquisition for WVU, bolstering the defensive backfield with a player of proven versatility and talent. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively reflects a high football IQ and athleticism, attributes that are expected to translate well to the collegiate level. As the Mountaineers prepare for the 2025-26 season, Horton’s addition signifies a strengthening of their defensive roster, with the potential for immediate impact upon his arrival in Morgantown.

In summary, Julien Horton’s decision to join WVU underscores the program’s commitment to attracting top-tier talent and enhancing its competitive edge in the forthcoming seasons. His multifaceted skill set and track record of excellence at the high school level position him as a promising asset for the Mountaineers’ future endeavors on the field.
