TJ Power Shocks Fans: Ex-Duke Star Forward Reaffirms Commitment, Cancels Rival Visit Fully Committed To Blue Devils

In a surprising turn of events, former Duke forward TJ Power has committed to the University of Blue Devils, opting to join the Dukes after entering the transfer portal. Power, a 6-foot-9 sophomore from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, was a five-star recruit and the No. 17 overall player in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings.

During his freshman season at Duke, Power saw limited action, averaging 2.1 points in 6.7 minutes per game over 26 appearances. Despite his limited role, he showcased his shooting ability by converting 35.7% of his three-point attempts. However, with Duke bringing in a top-ranked recruiting class, including consensus No. 1 overall recruit Cooper Flagg, Power’s opportunities for increased playing time appeared limited.

Seeking a more significant role, Power entered the transfer portal in April 2024. He ultimately chose Virginia, a program he had strongly considered during his initial recruitment. Power cited his trust in Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer and the program’s fit for his skills as key factors in his decision.

At Duke’s, Power is expected to have a more prominent role, particularly given the team’s need for sharpshooters. The Blue Devils finished 200th in adjusted offensive efficiency last season and are losing three of their top four scorers. Power’s ability to stretch the floor and make plays for his teammates aligns well with Duke’s offensive system.

Power’s transfer adds intrigue to the ACC rivalry between Duke and Virginia, as he will face his former team in the upcoming season. This move underscores the dynamic nature of college basketball and the impact of the transfer portal on team compositions within the conference.
