Notre Dame WBB Dominates No. 11 Duke in First Game as Nation’s No. 1 Team

**South Bend, IN** – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball team made a statement in their first game as the nation’s top-ranked team, delivering a commanding 64-49 victory over No. 11 Duke at Purcell Pavilion.

Coming off their ascension to the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll, the Fighting Irish showed why they deserve the top ranking, controlling the game from start to finish with suffocating defense and efficient offense. The win extends their impressive run and solidifies their position as a top contender this season.

    ### **Defensive Dominance Sets the Tone**

Notre Dame’s defense was relentless, holding the Blue Devils to just 32% shooting from the field and forcing 18 turnovers. The Irish applied constant pressure, making it difficult for Duke to find any rhythm offensively. Star guard Olivia Miles led the charge on the defensive end, racking up four steals and disrupting passing lanes throughout the game.

“Our defensive energy was outstanding,” said Notre Dame head coach Niele Ivey. “We knew coming in that Duke was a tough, well-coached team, but our intensity and focus were exactly where they needed to be.”

    ### **Balanced Scoring Leads the Way**

The Fighting Irish offense was powered by a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double figures. Hannah Hidalgo led the way with 18 points, showcasing her quickness and ability to finish at the rim. Sonia Citron added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Maddy Westbeld chipped in 12 points.

Notre Dame controlled the boards as well, outrebounding Duke 42-30. Their ability to dominate the glass and convert second-chance opportunities proved crucial in maintaining their lead.

    ### **Making a Statement as No. 1**

With this convincing victory, Notre Dame showed they are more than ready to embrace the pressure of being the nation’s top-ranked team. The Fighting Irish improve to 19-1 on the season and continue to build momentum heading into the final stretch before tournament play.

Next up, Notre Dame faces another tough test on the road against a ranked opponent, looking to extend their winning streak and further prove why they deserve to be at the top.

“This was a great team win,” said Hidalgo. “We’re excited about being No. 1, but we know we have a lot more to accomplish.”

The Fighting Irish certainly looked the part of a top team—dominant, disciplined, and determined.
