**Throwback: The Baltimore Orioles’ Battle in the 1983 Season and Their Triumphant Finish**

The Baltimore Orioles’ 1983 season was a memorable one, marked by resilience, skill, and a championship-winning performance. Managed by Joe Altobelli, who took over after the legendary Earl Weaver’s retirement, the Orioles faced early challenges but ultimately dominated, finishing with an impressive record of **98-64**, leading the American League East. This season remains one of the most cherished in the franchise’s history, as it ended with Baltimore securing their third World Series title.

    ### **A Strong Start and a Fierce Battle**

The Orioles kicked off the 1983 season with high expectations, featuring a roster filled with both seasoned veterans and emerging stars. The team was led by Hall of Fame first baseman Eddie Murray and the ever-reliable shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., who was coming off his Rookie of the Year campaign in 1982. Ripken would go on to win the **American League MVP** award that year, batting .318 with 27 home runs and 102 RBIs.

Pitching was another strong suit for the Orioles. Their rotation featured ace **Scott McGregor**, along with Mike Boddicker, Storm Davis, and Mike Flanagan. The bullpen, anchored by Tippy Martinez and Sammy Stewart, played a crucial role in securing victories throughout the season.

The battle for the AL East crown was intense, with the Orioles competing against the Milwaukee Brewers, Detroit Tigers, and New York Yankees. Despite some mid-season struggles, Baltimore surged in the second half of the season, thanks to dominant pitching and clutch performances from key hitters.

    ### **Finishing as the Best in the AL and a Dominant Postseason Run**

By the time the regular season ended, the Orioles finished with a **98-64 record**, five games ahead of the second-place Detroit Tigers. This secured them a spot in the **American League Championship Series (ALCS)** against the Chicago White Sox.

In the ALCS, Baltimore lost Game 1 but bounced back to win three straight, thanks to a shutout performance by **Mike Boddicker in Game 2** and a decisive 10-1 victory in Game 4. This set the stage for the **1983 World Series** against the Philadelphia Phillies.

    ### **World Series Glory**

The Orioles dominated the Phillies in the **World Series**, winning in **five games**. After losing Game 1, Baltimore won four straight, led by strong pitching performances from McGregor and Boddicker. Eddie Murray shined in **Game 5**, hitting two home runs to seal the championship.

The 1983 Orioles remain one of the franchise’s greatest teams, cementing their legacy with a championship that still resonates with fans today.
