LSU Women’s Basketball Losses Major Key Forward Star Athletes To Worst Career Ending Injury Ruled Out Of the Season

LSU’s women’s basketball team has faced significant challenges this season due to injuries among key players, notably forward Sa’Myah Smith.

**Sa’Myah Smith’s Season-Ending Injury**

Sophomore forward Sa’Myah Smith suffered a severe knee injury during a game against Niagara on November 29, 2023. In the opening minutes, Smith slipped while driving to the basket, resulting in tears to her ACL, MCL, and meniscus. Prior to her injury, she was averaging nearly 14 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, shooting 66% from the field. Smith had previously overcome a similar injury in high school, demonstrating resilience and determination.

LSU’s head coach, Kim Mulkey, expressed profound sadness over Smith’s injury, highlighting her significant improvement and dedication over the summer. Mulkey emphasized Smith’s positive attitude and commitment to supporting the team despite her season-ending injury.

**Impact on the Team**

Smith’s absence has been a considerable setback for the Tigers. Her increased production early in the season was crucial, especially during periods when other key players were unavailable. For instance, star forward Angel Reese missed four games in November for undisclosed reasons, during which Smith’s performance helped maintain the team’s competitiveness.

The team has also faced other challenges, such as the departure of junior guard Kateri Poole in December 2023. Poole, who started during LSU’s national championship run the previous season, left the team under circumstances not fully detailed by Coach Mulkey.

**Coach Mulkey’s Perspective on Conference Tournaments**

In light of these injuries, Coach Mulkey has questioned the necessity of conference tournaments, particularly in women’s college basketball, where unexpected outcomes are less common. Her concerns were amplified when star forward Aneesah Morrow re-aggravated a mid-foot sprain during the SEC Tournament semifinal loss to Texas. Mulkey emphasized the importance of player health and expressed skepticism about the value of these tournaments, especially when they pose risks to key players ahead of the NCAA Tournament.

**Looking Ahead**

Despite these setbacks, LSU remains a formidable team with a strong season record of 28-5. The health and performance of returning players like Angel Reese and the anticipated recovery of Aneesah Morrow are crucial as the Tigers prepare for the NCAA Tournament. Their resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity will be key factors in their pursuit of championship success.
