Breaking: Gonzaga Bulldogs Loses Another Five-Star Elite Recruit To Decommitment enters Transfer Portal

  1. The Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball program has experienced significant roster changes in recent seasons, particularly concerning the departure of highly touted recruits and players via the transfer portal. These developments have raised concerns about the team’s ability to maintain its competitive edge in collegiate basketball.

One notable departure was that of Hunter Sallis, a former five-star recruit and one of the highest-rated players in Gonzaga’s history. Sallis, known for his defensive prowess and athleticism, entered the transfer portal after the 2022-2023 season. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, he played in 59 games off the bench, averaging 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in his sophomore year. His decision to transfer left a void in Gonzaga’s backcourt depth.

In addition to Sallis, Dominick Harris, another highly regarded guard from the 2020 recruiting class, also opted to transfer. Harris, a four-star recruit, faced limited playing time due to injuries and a crowded backcourt. He appeared in only 10 games during the 2022-2023 season, averaging 1.5 points in 4.4 minutes per game. His departure further underscored the challenges Gonzaga faced in retaining top talent.

The frontcourt was not immune to these changes. Efton Reid III, a former five-star recruit and 7-foot center, transferred to Gonzaga from LSU with high expectations. However, during the 2024-2025 season, he struggled to secure significant playing time, averaging 2.1 points and 1.0 rebounds in 4.7 minutes per game. Reid’s subsequent decision to enter the transfer portal marked another significant loss for the Bulldogs.

Despite these departures, Gonzaga has actively sought to replenish its roster through the transfer portal. A notable addition is Jalen Warley, a guard who transferred from Virginia. Warley, with experience from his time at Florida State and Virginia, brings versatility and depth to the Bulldogs’ backcourt. He is set to redshirt the current season and will be eligible to play in the 2025-2026 season.

These roster fluctuations highlight the evolving landscape of college basketball, where player movement has become increasingly common. For Gonzaga, maintaining its status as a perennial powerhouse will depend on its ability to adapt to these changes, effectively recruit, and develop both incoming freshmen and transfer players. The program’s resilience and strategic approach to roster management will be critical in navigating the challenges posed by the modern collegiate basketball environment.
