We’ve already thoroughly covered the fact that the NHL Draft Lottery is taking place on Tuesday. The San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, and Anaheim Ducks have the highest odds to secure the number one pick.
Of course, this comes after the Chicago Blackhawks selected Connor Bedard with the No.1 pick in the 2023 draft.
Bedard impressed in year one, concluding the season with 22 goals, 39 assists, and 61 points.
Blackhawks fans are undoubtedly on the edge of their seats, envisioning the potential synergy between Bedard and the expected first-pick Macklin Celebrini, a prospect that could bring a new era of success to the team.
It seems like just a few years ago, the Blackhawks dominated the league, led by Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and company.
The Blackhawks are in complete rebuild mode, building a team around Bedard.
League rules state the Blackhawks are only eligible for the first pick in the draft twice within five years. If the Blackhawks win the lottery, they can’t regain a No.1 pick for several years.
During the 2023-2024 season, the Blues won the series matchups against Chicago, 3-1.
There is a significant difference between the teams. The Blues are focused on the young tandem of Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou, though they also rely on veteran experience to push them into future playoff contention.
Going young and rebuilding, the Blackhawks are in an unfamiliar position. In fact, Chicago defenseman Seth Jones alluded to this himself, noting his displeasure with being part of a “rebuild.”
While the Blues are the more impressive and battle-tested team today, the Blackhawks have the league’s attention and will be a contender if their top pick (whoever it is) performs as well as Bedard has.
