Michael Ajayi, a standout 6-foot-7 small forward from Kent, Washington, has committed to Gonzaga University for the 2024-25 basketball season. Ajayi, who led the West Coast Conference (WCC) in scoring with 17.1 points per game during his junior year at Pepperdine University, chose the Bulldogs over offers from Kentucky, Arkansas, and Duke.
Ajayi’s journey to Gonzaga is marked by perseverance and significant development. After playing only one year of varsity basketball at Kentwood High School during the COVID-19 pandemic, he received no scholarship offers. Determined to advance his career, Ajayi enrolled at Pierce College, a junior college in Washington, where he averaged 20.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. His performance earned him the 2022 Northwest Athletic Conference West Region’s Most Valuable Player award.
During a spring pro-am event hosted by NBA veteran Jamal Crawford, Ajayi’s talent caught the attention of former NBA player Isaiah Thomas. Impressed by Ajayi’s skills, Thomas facilitated a connection with Pepperdine’s coach, leading to Ajayi’s first Division I scholarship offer.
At Pepperdine, Ajayi quickly became a key player, leading the WCC not only in scoring but also ranking second in rebounds with 9.9 per game. He showcased his shooting efficiency by converting 46.7% from the field and an impressive 47% from three-point range.
Ajayi’s decision to transfer to Gonzaga was influenced by several factors, including the program’s consistent success and proximity to his hometown. “I felt like it was the place to be,” Ajayi stated. “Parents can come to all the games, and Mark Few is a really great coach. He takes players to the next level, and that’s where I want to be.”
Gonzaga head coach Mark Few expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Ajayi to the team. “Michael is a great addition,” Few said. “He is a driven worker with high character that will be a great fit with our guys.”
Ajayi’s commitment bolsters Gonzaga’s roster, which aims for a strong performance in the upcoming season. His versatility and proven scoring ability are expected to make a significant impact as the Bulldogs pursue national championship aspirations.
