Michigan Basketball Dusty May Loses Five-Star Freshman Guard Former Son Of NBA Legend To NCAA Transfer Portal Opening Day

Michigan Wolverines’ freshman guard Justin Pippen, son of NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, has entered the NCAA transfer portal during the team’s NCAA Tournament run. The transfer portal opened on Monday, March 24, 2025, and Pippen’s decision was confirmed by multiple sources.

Pippen, a four-star recruit from Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, California, joined Michigan’s 2024 class under head coach Dusty May. During his freshman season, he appeared in 28 games, averaging 1.6 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.6 assists in 6.6 minutes per game. Notably, Pippen did not see court action during the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan’s head coach, Dusty May, acknowledged the challenges of the transfer portal opening during the NCAA Tournament. He mentioned on ‘Inside Michigan Basketball’ that the team is balancing scouting for upcoming games while monitoring potential roster changes. May also anticipates that key players like Danny Wolf and Vladislav Goldin may pursue NBA opportunities next season, indicating potential further shifts in the team’s composition.

As the Wolverines prepare for their Sweet 16 matchup against the Auburn Tigers on Friday, March 28, 2025, at 6:39 PM PDT, the departure of Pippen underscores the dynamic nature of college basketball rosters during tournament play.
